Organised by the Food and Agricultural Association of the United Nations, the International Day of Forests celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of each type of forest. This year’s theme of “Forests and Health” highlights the crucial role of trees in maintaining both environmental and human health.
Did you know that roughly 50,000 species of plant have medicinal properties? For example, the Madagascan periwinkle provides vinblastine and vincristine, both of which form medicines to fight cancers such as leukaemia. Forests also provide natural barriers to prevent disease transmission between wild animals and humans. Our most recent global pandemic of Covid-19 — which is thought to have originated in wild bats and spread to the human population via human consumption — is recent proof of the dangerous combination of habitat destruction and human overconsumption.
Spending time in forests has also been proven to improve human mental and physical health. Studies have shown that phytoncides — natural insecticides released by trees — can significantly boost the immune system by provoking increased production of pathogen-fighting white blood cells. The calm surroundings of forests have also been proven to reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, improve mood, and sharpen focus.
