**Key takeaways**

- Murata is ending production of selected [multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs)](https://www.murata.com/en-us/products/capacitor/ceramiccapacitor) across nine series: GRM, GRJ, GRT, GXM, GXT, GCM, GCJ, GCG and ZRA.
- The last order date is 31 March 2028. Final shipments run until 31 March 2029.
- Murata is moving capacity towards capacitors for AI servers. Standard consumer and automotive parts are the ones being cut.
- If you hold these capacitors as excess inventory, do not scrap them. Demand for discontinued parts usually rises after production ends.

Murata is one of the world's leading capacitor makers, and its parts sit on circuit boards across almost every part of the electronics industry. So this change will reach most manufacturers in some way.

Here is what is happening, the dates that matter, and what to do next, whether you hold these parts or need to buy them.

## What is Murata discontinuing?

Murata is ending production of selected capacitor part numbers within nine of its product series. The notice went to customers and distributors in early September 2026, and DigiTimes reported on 10 September that Murata will gradually end production of several capacitor part numbers.

The change covers consumer, automotive and radio frequency grades. It applies to selected part numbers, not every part in each series. Your Murata supplier or distributor can confirm which of your part numbers are affected.

## Which Murata series are affected?

The nine series named in the notice are:

- **GRM:** Murata's general-purpose capacitors, used across consumer and industrial electronics
- **GCM:** automotive grade capacitors
- **GRJ, GRT, GXM, GXT, GCJ, GCG and ZRA:** further consumer, automotive and specialist series

GRM and GCM are among the most widely used capacitor ranges in the industry. If your products use Murata capacitors, check your parts lists for these prefixes first.

### **What are the key dates?**

![Murata Key Dates Timeline](https://www.componentsense.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Key_Dates_Timeline.png?width=815&height=459&name=Key_Dates_Timeline.png)

Dates as reported by [eeFocus](https://global.eefocus.com/article/capacity-expansion-or-production-halt-mlcc-leader-opts-for-strategic-pruning.html) and [BigGo Finance](https://finance.biggo.com/news/ee0262b6-4f7d-4c7e-aad0-9af6e9394b16), September 2026.

## Why is Murata doing this?

Murata is moving production capacity from standard capacitors to higher-value capacitors for AI servers. AI server demand has grown quickly, and these servers need large numbers of high-performance capacitors. Standard parts, which earn lower margins, are the ones being cut.

It is part of a wider pattern. Across the industry in 2026, capacity is moving to AI products, and everyday parts made on older production lines are getting harder to find. For the bigger picture, see our [Semiconductor Industry Trends Report 2026](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/semiconductor-industry-trends-report-2026). Other major capacitor makers have also reported price rises this year.

## What does this mean for manufacturers holding these Murata capacitors?

If you hold affected Murata capacitors as excess inventory, they are likely to become more valuable, not less. When a widely used part goes out of production, manufacturers who still need it for existing products turn to inventory that is already out there. And [correctly stored components keep their value for years](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/lifespan-of-electronic-components-explained).

![Murata Rising Value Graphic](https://www.componentsense.com/hs-fs/hubfs/murata-rising-value-graphic-usd.png?width=2400&height=1260&name=murata-rising-value-graphic-usd.png)

That makes this the wrong time to scrap or write off surplus capacitors. Here are five steps to take now:

1. **Export your capacitor inventory.** Pull every Murata part number you hold, with quantities, [date codes](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/how-to-read-date-codes-on-electronic-components-a-practical-guide) and packaging.
2. **Check it against the notice.** Ask your Murata supplier or distributor which of your part numbers are on the list.
3. **Do not scrap anything yet.** Parts that looked like low-value surplus may soon be in demand.
4. **Get a valuation.** Find out what your surplus is worth while demand is building.
5. **Choose how to recover the value.** [Sell outright](https://www.componentsense.com/sell-excess-electronic-components-quickly-outright-purchase) for a fast return, or use [Consignment](https://www.componentsense.com/sell-excess-electronic-components-consignment) to keep ownership until each part sells. Not sure which suits you? Read [Consignment vs Outright Purchase](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/consignment-vs-outrightpurchase).

### **Review your whole excess list, not just capacitors**

If Murata's notice has you checking your capacitors, it is worth reviewing all your excess at the same time. [Discontinuations are happening across the industry](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/electronic-component-obsolescence-management-a-practical-guide-for-manufacturers) in 2026, and parts you have written off may be [worth more than you think](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/the-best-time-to-sell-your-excess-stock).

Send us your full excess list: any manufacturer, any part type. We will match it against live demand from our global buyer network and tell you what it is worth. There is no cost and no obligation.

## What should buyers do if they need discontinued Murata capacitors?

If your products rely on affected Murata part numbers, you have three main options:

1. **Place a last order before 31 March 2028.** Work out how many parts you will need for the rest of each product's life and order through your authorised channel before the deadline.
2. **Buy from existing excess inventory.** Once production stops, surplus held by other manufacturers becomes the main supply. Look for new, unused parts with [full traceability](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/importance-of-full-component-traceability).
3. **Redesign as a last resort.** Changing to a different capacitor means testing and requalifying the design, which takes time and money. That is especially true for automotive products, which must meet strict [automotive qualification standards](http://www.aecouncil.com/AECDocuments.html).

## Frequently asked questions

###### Is Murata discontinuing all GRM capacitors?

No. Murata is discontinuing selected part numbers within the GRM series and eight others. Many GRM parts will stay in production. Check your exact part numbers with your Murata supplier or distributor.

###### What is the last order date for the discontinued Murata capacitors?

The last order date is 31 March 2028. Customers must confirm requirements in writing by 31 December 2027, and final shipments run until 31 March 2029.

###### Why is Murata discontinuing these capacitors?

Murata is moving production capacity to high-performance capacitors for AI servers. Lower margin standard capacitors are being cut to make room.

###### Are automotive capacitors affected?

Yes. The notice covers automotive-grade series, including GCM. Automotive manufacturers may be hit hardest, because changing a qualified part takes longer in automotive than in most other industries.

###### What should I do with surplus Murata capacitors I already hold?

Keep them and get them valued. Demand for discontinued capacitors usually rises once production ends. You can [sell them outright](https://www.componentsense.com/sell-excess-electronic-components-quickly-outright-purchase) or place them on [Consignment](https://www.componentsense.com/sell-excess-electronic-components-consignment).

###### Where can I buy discontinued Murata capacitors?

Once production ends, the main supply is excess inventory held by manufacturers and redistributors. Component Sense [holds Murata capacitors in live inventory](https://www.componentsense.com/stock/search/GRM1), including discontinued parts, with a counterfeit-free guarantee and a 12-month warranty.

### Got excess you want to move?

Murata's announcement is a reminder that parts can go from common to hard to find within a year or two. If you are holding excess capacitors or any other surplus components, now is a good time to find out what they are worth.
