In the first quarter of Nvidia's 2026 fiscal year, it recorded a [$4.5 billion charge](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1045810/000104581025000116/nvda-20250427.htm) covering H20 product inventory already on its books and purchase obligations for more of it, after US export restrictions cut off the chips' main market in China.

That example is an extreme case; however, the same mechanism can play out at a smaller scale when an electronic manufacturer holds inventory it can no longer use. Excess and obsolete (E&O) inventory can also build quietly rather than all at once, and the cumulative cost can rival a single charge like Nvidia's. Components age past their moisture sensitivity level (MSL) floor life, date codes get harder to place with every quarter that passes, and end-of-life (EOL) windows close while the part is still sitting on a shelf, still on the books at full cost.

## Excess vs Obsolete Inventory and Why They Can Still Hold Resale Value

Excess and obsolete inventory are components a manufacturer no longer needs in the quantity or timeline for which they were bought, or that its own supplier has discontinued. Excess is usually recoverable if acted on early. Obsolete inventory, meaning components no longer in production, is often the hardest of the two to find anywhere else, which is exactly what keeps it valuable to the right buyer rather than worthless.

## E&O Inventory Runs on Three Clocks

Inventory obsolescence in electronics doesn't wait for a quarterly review. It runs on three separate clocks: MSL expiry, ageing date codes, and closing end-of-life (EOL) windows.

### MSL Expiry

Moisture-sensitive devices have a floor-life window once removed from sealed packaging, and it can run as short as a day or less for the most sensitive package ratings. Our [guide to MSL, floor life, storage](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/moisture-sensitivity-levels-msl-floor-life-storage-and-baking)[,](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/moisture-sensitivity-levels-msl-floor-life-storage-and-baking)[and baking](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/moisture-sensitivity-levels-msl-floor-life-storage-and-baking) covers the full ratings table. Once that window closes, the part either needs a controlled bake before reflow or it can't be used as-is. Excess components that have been opened and returned to the shelf, or held in bags past their shelf life, need baking before they can be used. The longer it sits, the more likely it is to need that rework.

### Ageing Date Codes

A [date code](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/how-to-read-date-codes-on-electronic-components-a-practical-guide) records when a component was manufactured, and as it ages, a part can get harder to place because some buyers set a maximum date code age for what they will accept. A standard inventory valuation doesn't register that change, since it carries the part at its original cost until a reserve or write-down is booked. Identifying excess early, while date codes are still current, gives a manufacturer more room to market it at a better price.

### EOL Last-Time-Buy Deadlines

An end-of-life notice from a manufacturer sets a last-time-buy date, the final point at which customers can place orders for the part. After it passes, a manufacturer's options narrow to redesign, redistribution, or a write-down. While other manufacturers still depend on the part, there can be buyers for excess inventory of it, and that demand may thin as those manufacturers redesign around it. Reviewing E&O status against the market, not the calendar, helps catch that change before the opportunity narrows.

## How to Size an E&O Inventory Reserve

An E&O reserve is the allowance a manufacturer books against inventory it doesn't expect to sell at full value, and getting its size wrong in either direction costs money. Too small, and the write-down still hits, just later and by surprise. Too large, and the balance sheet is understating assets the company actually holds.

Reserve levels vary by how fast a manufacturer's product line turns over. [CliftonLarsonAllen's (CLA) manufacturing guidance](https://www.claconnect.com/en/resources/blogs/manufacturing/whats-a-reasonable-inventory-reserve-a-guide-for-businesses) on inventory reserves puts fast-turning inventory with limited slow movers and longer product lifecycles at a 3 to 5% reserve, a mixed portfolio with seasonal or configuration-specific items at 5 to 8%, and heavy exposure to prior-generation models or frequent refresh cycles at 8% or more. A [graduated model tied to trailing twelve-month usage](https://www.claconnect.com/en/resources/blogs/manufacturing/whats-a-reasonable-inventory-reserve-a-guide-for-businesses) sharpens that further: the portion of inventory between one and two times trailing usage carries a 25% reserve, the portion between two and three times carries 50%, the portion between three and four times carries 75%, and the portion above four times trailing usage is reserved at 100% or evaluated for liquidation.

CLA describes three ways to build the reserve: an ageing-based method that applies escalating percentages as inventory ages, a consumption-based method, such as the usage model above, and a net realisable value approach. It notes that these can be combined into hybrid models. The factors it lists as pushing reserves higher include lifecycle obsolescence from design refreshes, demand fragmented by customer-specific configurations, technology shifts that strand older components, and a limited or costly secondary market that lowers net realisable value. That last factor is where redistribution options matter for the reserve, because net realisable value depends on what the inventory can actually be sold for.

It also stresses that the method should be documented and applied consistently from period to period. The demand horizon, the definition of excess, and the triggers for specific reserves should be documented, and the reserve should be validated by comparing reserved items with what actually happened to them over the following six to eighteen months. Finance, operations, product, and sales should agree on what constitutes reasonable consumption and how exceptions are handled.

## Three Ways OEMs Recover Excess and Obsolete Inventory Value Before a Write-Down

The window to capture value from excess and obsolete inventory closes well before the accounting deadline, and the earlier a manufacturer acts within that window, the more of the original purchase price it gets back. [Corning's Bob Siamro](https://www.componentsense.com/blog/case-study-corning-recovered-1.55m-from-excess) described the position Corning was in before it acted, saying, "A lot of our excess was EOL, but scrapping was a last resort due to environmental concerns." Between 2022 and 2025, Component Sense redistributed 2,524,839 of Corning's components and recovered more than $1.55 million, with income from redistributed components growing 74% year on year between 2022 and 2023.

Component Sense offers three excess solutions, matched to the level of control a manufacturer wants to keep. [Outright Purchase](https://www.componentsense.com/sell-excess-electronic-components-quickly-outright-purchase/) puts a cash bid on the table within 24 hours and uplifts inventory at Component Sense's cost within 48 hours. [Consignment](https://www.componentsense.com/sell-excess-electronic-components-consignment/) keeps title with the manufacturer, while Component Sense insures, stores, and markets the inventory to a network of 4,500-plus international buyers and brokers, returning up to 70% of the value, with inventory retrievable if a forecast shifts back. [InPlant™](https://www.componentsense.com/sell-excess-electronic-components-inplant/) sits inside a manufacturer's MRP system year-round, flagging excess as it appears rather than waiting for a count and can recover up to 100% of cost.

Whatever the count or the reserve model turns up, there's usually more recoverable value in it than a write-down assumes. Submit your excess and obsolete inventory list and Component Sense will tell you what it's worth, trace it to manufacturers who still need it, and plant two trees for every order along the way.
